LIVER, ESTROGEN, INSULIN CONNECTION

The Liver/Estrogen/Insulin connection is well established, and much ignored by mainstream medicine.

Whether you are peri-menopausal, menopausal, or a young woman, hormone issues are very real.  Guys, that “low-t” (low testosterone) may not be low t at all, it may be that you too are estrogen dominant.  

The foundation of these issues have more to do with liver congestion than with estrogen production. Sex related hormones are produced in the liver, ovaries, and testes. The liver has to be able to filter all of our hormones, along with all of the food toxins, the pharmaceutical drugs, the over-the-counter medications, the fats, sugars, and environmental toxins we come into contact with!

If your liver is not functioning properly, these toxins end up in our fat cells. Now, there are unhealthy fat cells, and healthy essential fats. However, if your diet is high in transfats, from all those cookies, cakes, candy, fast foods, then you have fat that is very unhealthy. Those transfats generally create excess adipose tissue, which also produces estrogens. So throwing more estrogen in the way of pharmaceuticals creates more problems in the long run!

Excessive estrogen disrupts thyroid function, slowing the thyroid down. Hypothyroid (low thyroid) is very closely linked to estrogen and progesterone levels. A simple shortage of thyroid hormone may be the cause of excessive estrogen, and the cycle continues.

Low thyroid equals low energy. Thyroid hormones use fat calories, and estrogen is what causes the fat to be stored. Since excess estrogen has to compete with the thyroid hormones, estrogen dominance blocks the thyroid from being effective. Sadly, this problem can start long before it will show up on standard lab tests.

If your blood sugars are high, and the liver has ended up clogged from high blood sugar and transfats, then the liver sends out hormones to store that fat in the way of adipose tissue. Since the adipose tissue fat is devoid of the essential nutrients needed to turn that fat back into energy, we end up with that belly we all want to go away. The body stores those transfats, hoping that someday when it needs an energy kick, that the fat will have the glucagon (glucose)  it needs to balance your blood sugar.  

These are complicated issues, and although mainstream medicine can throw pharmaceutical drugs at these issues, the end result is that you are chasing symptoms.

Hypoglycemia

Whole Food Medicine Paradise: This is a good article on hypoglycemia, with the one exception that is extremely important to note. Once again, the emphasis on carbohydrate (glucose) burning for energy, is stressed as being the primary source of fuel for the body. This is only because we have been indoctrinated into being “carbohydrate/glucose burners.” The preferred fuel for our body is actually to burn essential fats. Your heart, brain and muscles all prefer fat over carbohydrates. Fat burners produce ketones– not to be mixed up with “keto-acidosis. The blood stream is another pathway of elimination, red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body, white cells fight infection, LDL carries cholesterol, hormones, and essential fatty acids. HDL carries the old cells out of the body for elimination. Our vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids are transported via the blood stream.

Your lymphatic system clears bacteria, enhances immunity, and helps clear toxins of all kinds.  Without a healthy lymphatic system, we see lymphedema, lymphoma’s and cancer.  Being able to sweat is integral to good detoxification.

The kidneys are also extremely important in detoxification.  What isn’t filtered via the liver and intestinal tract gets dumped into the kidneys for elimination via our urine.  When the kidneys are taxed, we develop high blood pressure, edema, gout, and arthritis.  Blood sugar instability is extremely damaging to the kidneys.

The largest organ of elimination is our skin.  When your liver, kidneys, intestinal tract, lymph, lungs, blood are toxic, you develop rashes, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis, dandruff, hives and more.  By the time the skin is involved, you can be assured your body is very toxic.

FATS! THE MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE YOU CAN MAKE TO YOUR DIET!

Three months ago I began hosting a Ketogenic Diet Group in Chico.  What incredible results we’ve had!  Six women and I committed to learning about Weight loss, Blood Sugar Control, and the value of becoming “Fat Burners.”   The next group will be in Paradise, CA.  

All of us were experiencing metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and a couple of us were full-blown diabetics.  Each of us has lost a minimum of 6 pounds, and most between 10-20 pounds.  

To share a bit of this journey, four years ago, I was on oxygen 24/7, needed a scooter to get around, and because of systemic sarcoidosis, I was told to “put my affairs in order, I was not a heart/lung transplant candidate.”  I was on 13 prescription drugs, today, I take a thyroid pill.  I was pushing insulin twice a day, and taking glucophage.  Yes, I am still diabetic, but by making good fats the primary choice of food, followed by good, healthy proteins, and very minimal carbohydrates, my sugars have gone from being in the 200’s in the morning, to 130-150 by fasting glucose.  

Using coconut oil several times a day, my sugars are now in the 80-90 range following lunch, generally raw salmon and avocado.  Personally, I’ve finally broken a weight barrier that I’ve been at for the last couple of years, and lost 10+ pounds.  Over the last 4 years, I’ve now lost a total of 82 pounds!  

When you talk with your doctor about ketosis, they have a tendency to get a bit excited.  For them, ketosis means “ketoacidosis”.   Ketoacidosis is a serious condition that effects Type 1 DIabetics; where the pancreas is not able to produce insulin.  The body becomes extremely acidic, and you start spilling ketones in the 15millimol range, and unless you get immediate help, you are in jeopardy.  

That being said, NUTRITIONAL KETOSIS, is not  anywhere the same as ketoacidosis.  In NUTRITIONAL KETOSIS, your ketone levels are 1-2 mmol.  

So what is “ketosis?”  KETOSIS  is where your body burns fat for energy, instead of glucose.  All of us are taught that fat was the enemy.  TIME MAGAZINE’S JUNE 23, 2014 adresses this issue, with the cover stating ‘EAT BUTTER, Scientists labeled fats the enemy, why they were wrong.’  

Our brains and heart prefer fat to glucose.  Think about it, since the 1970’s, when we were told to stop eating fat, we have become a nation of overweight, diabetic, insulin resistant, metabolic syndrome society.  Some 29 million Americans have diabetes, and it is suspected that more than twice that just don’t know that they are diabetic.  Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, and a host of various neurodegenerative diseases have also become epidemic.  Autism, ADD, ADHD, have all skyrocketed.  Our protein consumption has stayed about the same during this time, our fat consumption dropped, and our carbohydrate consumption skyrocketed!  It doesn’t take a rocket-scientist to get the connection!  

NUTRITIONAL KETOGENIC DIETS (NKD) have been used to treat epilepsy in children for the last 80+ years.  There are multiple books and articles that state the use of NKD for treatment of cancers.  Why does this make sense?  

The brain needs fat and cholesterol to protect the nervous system, to keep the electrical signals firing correctly.  Glucose becomes like “carmelized sugar” blocking and destroying these nerve fibers.  Technically, it’s called Advanced Glycogenic End Stage product. (AGE’s).  

Fat -good fat feeds the brain, lowers inflammation, increases seratonin, dopamine, GABA.  It is the balancing act for high blood sugar. Carbohydrates give you immediate energy, then the following “crash and burn” two hours later.  You are left hungry, fatigued, in pain, because carbohydrates increase inflammation.  Protein sustains energy, at least until the next meal a couple of hours later.  Fat maintain energy over the long haul, stabilizing blood sugar.  (Check your glucose level, then eat a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil, and recheck your glucose level 20-30 minutes later, it should drop 20 points.)

IMMUNITY

Eighty-five percent of our immune system is in our gut!   The fact we have a “gut reaction” when under stress, or are coming down with something is not coincidence.

When we feel threatened, our “fight or flight” sets in, slowing digestion so that the other body organs can ready us to run or defend ourself.

But what happens when we are getting sick?  Most often, our body tells us we need to urinate more, and our bowels develop diarrhea.  This is your body kicking in the immune system.  It knows it needs to “clean house.”

Daily stress, seasonal changes, enviromental pollution, poor eating habits, lack of sleep & exercise all lower our immunity.

Inflammation, Chronic Pain, & the Sugar Connection

Inflammation is our friend.  At least that is what it is meant to be.  Without inflammation, cuts would not heal, infections would not go away.  Think of it, you cut your finger, and immediately, there is a red ring around the wound.  Within minutes, white cells accumulate, and a scab is formed.   This is acute short–term inflammation.  This is good inflammation!

Today, way to many of us suffer from chronic inflammation.  This happens when our body is subjected to dialy irritants, processed foods, poor air quality, poor sleep habits, prescription drugs and synthetic vitamins.

When inflammation becomes chronic we find ourself dealing with arthritis, pain, headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, neuropathy and so much more.

What does this have to do with sugar?  Everytime we consume sugar, whether it is glucose, fructose, lactose, we lower our immunity for 6-8 hours.  It means that our body has to work harder to protect us from injury or illness.
